Great coastal cruiser with great storage
The A32 is a great coastal cruiser with great storage, but a little light when it comes to water, fuel and waste. As to handling, I also think the boat tends to be a little tender and performs best if you reef early. When I bought my boat (30 years ago this year) I did the stability range numbers and this is what I wrote down at the time. Stability ratio ( righting ability) excellent, ( 130"/ cube root of 9800 = 6.07) ; Displacement/length ratio = 313 or heavy medium; sail area / displacement is 18.7 or generous ( this with the old 150 genoa that was used with this boat) .
As to issues to look for, I would replace all thru hull fittings ( scuppers) with seas cocks and replace all scupper hosing and deck fittings with new. I had an issue where the top of the deck fitting of a scupper drain broke away from the lower part and allowed the drain hose to drop into the boat below the water line allowing the water to pour in.
The main sail sheet bridle runs through two blocks on the deck. In heavy seas, I had one of these deck fitting break away, leaving the main uncontrollable. I learned that this deck block fitting has only one weld to hold on the bottom plate to the holding eye. I had both fittings rewelded with double welds (top and bottom).
I just returned from 12 days on the Royal Clipper cruise ship which is the largest sailing vessel ever built ( 5000 sq meters of sail area), It was fantastic. We boarded in Lisbon where several passengers had just completed the transatlantic crossing, with only 25% of the time under sail. Sometimes, too much wind is not the problem but too little fuel is.

The Aloha 32 was designed for comfortable, fast long-distance cruising, and is almost identical to another Ellis design, the Niagara 35, built by Hinterhoeller. They are both attractive, fast and safe cruising boats in lakes or ocean.
The hull is solid fibreglass below the waterline; decks are balsa-cored. The keel is external lead securely bolted to the hull. The space and storage is surprising for this size boat, making it a great choice for affordable, comfortable cruising in the islands of Canada or the Caribbean.
the original mark i interior was designed for passage-making, with two berths just inside the companionway. the head and galley separate it from the main saloon. the forepeak was for storage. the boat was redesigned because of customer demand to the encore layout with v-berth forward separated from the main saloon by a head and shower. a galley is located inside the companionway, with a quarterberth and nav station opposite. note the 6' 4" of headroom in the main cabin. in fact, most ellis designs have generous headroom, probably due to the fact, ellis himself is tall!
the jib is tacked forward of the stem on a short stainless bow-sprit, but still maintains a modern high-aspect sail-plan. the hull shape combines weight-carrying ability with speed and balanced ends. the spade rudder is balanced with a shallow-draught long fin keel. above the water, the design is traditional, with a slightly curved sheer, making it one of the prettiest sloops around.
